North Road Firewood was a land clearing company that was created by
Steve Sinnet in the early 90’s. Steve had previously been an owner of
South Mountain Company, one of the Island’s premier design and build
companies. He had two employees, Mike and Alan Turnell. North Road
Firewood provided landscape clearing and building services. One of
their clients was Sanford Evans and Associates, an independent site
planning and design firm.
Steve and Sanford’s easy working
relationship and collective beliefs about landscape design and use
became the impetus for the birth of a company whose owners would work
closely together to creatively find solutions to the demands and
problems of new landscape sites. Steve’s college friend,
Peter Robinson, a landscaper from NH, joined North Road Firewood in
1994. In 1996 Steve, Sanford, Alan, Michael, and Peter together created
Indigo Farm, Inc.
Indigo Farm was created on three principles:
•Shared values regarding the environmental preservation of
each sites existing landforms and the use of organic
methods of planting •The understanding of Vineyard landforms •The commitment to beautifully and creatively blend built landscapes with their existing natural sites
With
Steve’s ties to South Mountain Company the majority of the projects
Indigo Farm worked on were in collaboration with the company. This
close relationship continues today.
In 2000 Steve retired to
pursue more worldly interests. Michael Turnell went on to the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he received a degree in
Landscape Architecture in 2001. He worked closely with Sanford on the
Indigo designs until Sanford’s retirement to Maine in 2005. Alan
Turnell then left Indigo in 2006 to expand on the areas of landscaping
that are of particular interest to him.
Indigo Farm continues to work along the same principles it was founded
on. Peter Robinson, owner, builder, and maintenance foreman oversees a
crew that keeps all our designs in top shape. Mike Turnell, owner,
designer, and builder oversees the crew responsible to carry out the
building of our designs. Our two crews work closely together, aiding
each other when need be to execute and maintain our client’s dreams.

The respect we at Indigo Farm have for this island community and its
stunning natural beauty is mirrored in the business practices and
working relationships we have with our clients, colleagues, and each
other. Our continued close collaboration with the crew of South
Mountain Company is a satisfying and rewarding one, continuing to allow
us to work on projects that challenge our creative solutions to the
landscape.
We go forward with a sense of gratitude and anticipation in continuing
to create sites of serenity from the evocative beauty of this island.
